This problem is addressed in PRISMA 2009 (Q7), PRISMA 2020 (Q6), AMSTAR 1 (Q3), AMSTAR 2 (Q4), ROBIS (P2 D2), and MECIR (C24 & C25). Literature searches should be performed across several relevant bibliographic databases. Ideally the search strategy should be revisited and refined if further relevant papers are identified that were not picked up by the literature searches. There is now a dedicated extension for reporting the searches in systematic reviews called PRISMA-S.
